In 1928, Alexander Fleming was studying the staphylococcus bacteria when he decided to leave on a two week vacation. One of his petri dishes containing staphylococcus was accidentally left out, and a penicillium notatum mold spore became accidentally introduced to the dish. Conveniently, by forgetting to place the dish in an incubator, the mold was able to grow. Once Fleming discovered what had happened, the attempted to replicate the results with varying degrees of success. For roughly ten years after his discovery, Fleming focused on the use of penicillin as a skin antiseptic (think Neosporin), and failed to recognize its potential as an oral or injectable antibiotic. It wasn’t until 1940 that Howard Florey and Ernst Chain demonstrated its significant use as an antibiotic. 5 years later, Fleming finally won the Nobel Peace Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
