Lickona's influence on character education began in the late 20th century through current day. He directs the center for the 4th and 5th R's (respect and responsibility). This center promotes character education throughout all stages of school life. Lickona believes that adults must teach kids through both lessons and experiences about morality (Tatman, Edmonson, & Slate, 2017). Lickona is quoted as saying" Not to teach children these core ethical values is a grave moral failure" (Tatman, Edmonson, & Slate, 2017, p.9).
