The war had an enormous impact on the people of this time. Literature was changed due to the circumstances happening around the people. Since the Civil War had taken place, many lives were already lost, and life was already so difficult as it was. The Great Depression and more wars would be coming, and so many did not feel safe, and sons, fathers, uncles, and grandfathers were being sent to the trenches. Rebecca West's book illustrates the atrocities of how this war affected all those who went through it. Post-Traumatic Stress Syndrome was/is an issue and causes problems for loved ones. The main character suffers this syndrome and this affects his family. Modernistic ideas show that the economy and society, in general, was changed because of the war itself. Life felt bleaker and many lives were lost. The war between the nations caused a large gap in society. Unfortunately, this war would only lead to more devastation.
