12 agos 1914 anni - Women's Role in WWI

Descrizione:

World War One brought change to women’s role within their communities. Namely, the war offered women increased opportunities in the labor market. An estimated two million women replaced men in employment, filling jobs that men would normally dominate. This also came with a feminist pressure on unions, threatening to destabilize them. Women’s presence in the work force broke traditional values held during the Victorian Era. For instance, it was not likely that women would work alongside their male counterparts in businesses. Women tended to more clerical and domestic duties. Women were also considered physically weaker than men, making it unlikely for women to fill the roles of men in the workplace. The war allowed for a breaking of this tradition. The breaking of traditional values was reflected in women’s work during the years, and even after, the war. An example is author May Sinclair. May Sinclair offered many different texts during the way, such as Tasker Jevons, The Romantic, Anne Severn and the Fieldings, and The Tree of Heaven. These texts all reflected the response and aftermath of the war.
