When the pope denied King Henry VIII's request for a divorce, King Henry VIII, driven by his personal greed for political power, decided to break off from the Roman Catholic Church. No longer part of the Catholic Church, Henry had total control over the English Church and made it the way he wanted. The clergy were forced to choose sides between Rome and England, and many were executed as a result.
