The promising political career of Franklin Roosevelt is tragically cut short when he succumbs to polio. Roosevelt contracted polio while supervising a Boy Scout picnic in late July 1921. He began showing symptoms the following month, and steadily declined. On 12 September he succumbed to the disease.
