The Avro Arrow was a jet, being developed to shoot down Russian nuclear-armed bombers. It could travel at twice the speed of sound, almost faster than any other machine of its time. The first Arrow took flight on March 25, 1958, demonstrating Canada's leadership in aeronautical engineering to the world. To many Canadian’s disbelief, the project was cancelled only a few months later on February 20, 1959 by the Diefenbaker government, supposedly because of its escalating cost to produce. This was a mournful occasion for most Canadians, who believed the jet could have been a pioneer for future Canadian innovation.
