The Underground Railroad is said to have officially started around now. The Railroad was a secretive route offering freedom for slaves from the south of the United States to north. Harriet Tubman, pictured above, is synonymous with the Underground Railroad. Sources says she traveled the route dozens of times escorting slaves to safety in the north.
