In April 1982, the Assembly of First Nations, a political organization that represents nearly one million Aboriginals in Canada, was founded. It kept the NIB as its administrative secretariat, and to this day, legal agreements are done through the NIB. This organization plays an important role in giving Aboriginal peoples throughout Canada a voice that can be heard by the federal government.
