1 ottob 1970 anni - FLQ Crisis

Descrizione:

The front de libération du Québec (FLQ) was founded in the early '60s by a group of radical separatists in Quebec. Acting in defiance against Prime Minister Trudeau, who opposed separation, the FLQ kidnapped British diplomat James Cross in October of 1970, and published a number of demands that had to be met for his release. The demand for FLQ members to be excused from prison sentences had not been met, so the FLQ retaliated once more by kidnapping Labour Minister Pierre Laporte. The radical group had become a large threat to Trudeau, so he decided to take drastic measures by invoking the War Measures Act, stripping Canadian citizens of their civil rights. By October 16th, the kidnappings were heavily pursued by federal troops, patrolling Ottawa and Montreal in search of separatist sympathisers. Anyone believed to be a sympathizer was immediately detained. One day later, Laporte was found, murdered. This further pushed for the rescue of Cross, who was eventually found after 60 days in FLQ captivity. After the crisis had passed, most of the 450 people detained were released without charges. However, it caused a lot of distrust towards French nationalists, particularly separatists.
