Otis, Edwin and Nathaniel, had preceded the rest of the party coming to the San Luis Valley in 1868 and 1869. They had selected the home site, and had a good sized log house built and ready for us. They had sawed boards by hand out of cottonwood logs to make a roof and a floor, and the board floor was considered quite a luxury since almost all houses in the Valley then had dirt floors. The old house is still used as a sheep camp, and stands a little distance off the road just east of Rito Alto Church.
