The Terraformer War devastates Earth and most colonies. In the end, Nathan Ridley Gunne is able to lure the remains of the Terraformer fleet back through the gate, which is destroyed behind them.

There will be almost no space flight on Earth for several centuries to come as the ravaged world recovers, and it is not even considered to build a jumpgate again.

After crossing, the crew of the USCSS Dragonfyre (Gunne's ship) observes an unknown vessel falling at relativistic velocity through the Proxima Centauri system. The following day, the jumpgates begin to work once more, but now lead to completely different star systems.

The plans of the Old Ones, already endangered by Earth inventing jumpgates on their own, were finally toppled by the raging Terraformer fleet. To construct a working community of species, able to survive (including the Terraformers), the Old Ones took the only option: they reconfigured jumpgate routes of many star systems and many species, to form a closed loop where nobody can get in or out. Only species which have encountered the Terraformers before during those past 80 years are inside this loop. This is the day, when the "X-Universe" is actually created (="stitched together").

The Teladi home planet Ianamus Zura and one of its lesser colonies, Seizewell, are separated by the changed jumpgate routes. There is not much spaceflight and technical knowledge left on this Teladian colony.
