The going of the day; sunset. 1689 <i>James Stancliffe, a boye of about 14 yeares of age, came to this deponent’s house in Dewisbury about daye-gate, and came to the fyer, and desired lodging</i> (SS40/287). The Surtees Society editor noted the word in Durham in 1675 and the OED has ‘day-going’ in 1638.
