Leland commented on its frequency in the Isle of Axholme and it was formerly common in the Thorne and Hatfield Levels: 1529 <i>for risshis, birk, and gales strewed in the chappell</i>, York (SS129/132); 1687 <i>required candles, which being refused then they immediately lighted gale, carrying it in their hands, up and down the house and under the beds</i>, Hatfield (QS1/26/3).
