This was a rod of a definite length used for measuring land, and in standard measure it was equivalent to 5½ yards. There were local differences, and in 1684 Black Carr Wood in Tong was estimated at <i>36 acres alloweing sixe yards to the pearche</i>. The woods could not be <i>exactly measured until they shalbe sprung … and cleansed</i> (Mss3/377).
