Final ‘th’ was regularly not pronounced in some dialects, notably in a suffix such as ‘forth’, so ‘garr’ was an unusual spelling of ‘garth’. 1591 ‘a messuage, and houses, orchards, <i>garres</i> and gardens’, Pannal (YRS65/31). The minor place-name Garrs End (Grassington) was <i>the Garthe ende</i> in 1611 (PNWR6/98).
