A dialect word applied to a variety of plants, such as the dog-rose. Wright has Yorkshire examples from 1684 and 1788 (EDD). The unpublished account books of a doctor called Henry Power mention dyeing yellow with <i>Catwhinns</i> in 1654-5 (HP) and Canon Atkinson comments on <i>a land lying in a place called the Cattwhinns</i> in 1723, in Newton in Cleveland (NRQS9/70).
