A carrier or porter. The terms have been noted only in Beverley. 1367 <i>Ordinacio portitorum et crelemen</i> (BTD21); 1381 <i>Johannes Creler’</i>, Barliholme (PTER); 1409 <i>pro cariagio tegularum computant cum crelers</i> (ERAS4/31); 1467 <i>cariator, portitor vel creler</i> (BTD57); 1628 <i>no creler, cadger or carrier</i> ... <i>until he obtains a licence</i>, Beverley (YRS84/47). Clearly the porters in Beverley carried heavy loads, probably on their backs, and the creels they used may have been made of wicker work.
