A light kind of musket which did not require a ‘rest’. It was originally of a certain ‘calibre’, a word which has the same origin: 1586 <i>Item of Callyvers xxiiij</i>, Sheffield (TWH14/261); 1588 <i>for oyling a callever 1d</i>, Ingleby Arncliffe (YAJ16/143); 1610 <i>one calliver with a head piece, a flax and tutch box, </i>Kirkstall (SpSt).
