A reel of yarn spun upon a spindle (EDD). 1637 ‘Isabel Roades ... for stealing ... at Allerton in Bradford Dale <i>fower coppins of yarne</i>, value 8d’ (YRS54/46); 1698 <i>found severall coppins of woollen yarne lapt upp in a cote</i>, Haworth (QS1/37/1). It probably explains the Mirfield place-name Coppin Hall, similar therefore to Bracken Hall, Gosling Hall, Moldwarp Hall and other names of that type in the Huddersfield area.
