Typically, thick cream was sweetened and mixed with eggs, wine or ale, with a variety of spices added to give it flavour: 1674 <i>a Cawdle Cupp & Cover</i>, Doncaster (YRS134/142); 1682 <i>one caudell pott of platte, the largest peece of plate I have</i>, Selby (YRS47/87).
