The meaning is uncertain. Smith raised several possibilities in his comments on the place-name Slode which is in Warley near Halifax: he had references from 1624 (PNWR3/125). One earlier example has been noted: 1593 <i>escurare et purgare debent cursu’ aque inter le Slode et le turffgates</i>, Slaithwaite (DD/R/M).
