The word is first on record in an Act of 1389 (OED): 1637 <i>fistulas leporar’, Angl. harepipes</i>, Stainborough (YRS54/38); 1674 <i>set one snare or harepipe in a hedge in his owne close</i>, Mirfield (QS1); 1696 <i>Abraham Fitton illegally three hares with harepipes</i>, Lepton (QS1).
