A regional word for a shock of corn, that is twelve sheaves. 1598 <i>gleanynge of Corne amongst the stowkes in Harvest tyme</i>, West Riding (YRS3/87); 1612 <i>for stealing a stowke of rye value 2s 4d,</i> Tanton (NRQS1/243). In 1642 Henry Best wrote: <i>A good shearer will sheare constantly 10 stookes of Winter-corne in a day ... it is usuall for one man to binde and stooke after 6 or 8 shearers ... stookers have (for the most parte) viijd a day,</i> Elmswell (DW45,50).
