Gimp was originally silk, worsted or cotton twist with a cord or wire running through it (OED). 1663 <i>2 dos. gimps lace, 3s 8d</i>, Selby (YRS47/85); 1690 <i>Laid downe for gimpe laise at Skipton</i> (RW21). However, it came to refer less specifically to a kind of trimming, sometimes decorated with beads or spangles, so <i>five dozen of gimp buttons</i> which were listed in a Knaresborough inventory in 1696 were possibly ornamental features (QS1/35/8).
