This was originally a curved broad sword which had the edge on the convex side, although the word may have been used of any sword by the seventeenth century when it occurred frequently. 1586 <i>Item a target and a fawchen</i>, Sheffield (TWH14/261); 1667 <i>two swords and a falchion</i>, North Bierley (YRS134/125); 1680 <i>my gilded fauchien</i>, Lepton (WBW/36). The spelling could vary considerably: 1666 <i>one foatchon, two saddles and two bridles</i>, Richmond (NRQS6/107).
