The meaning is not absolutely clear, but it was evidently a weapon, perhaps similar to a pikestaff, with a short blade or rapier fastened into a wooden handle. 1559 <i>to George Parker my brother one raper sword,</i> Rothwell (Th27/278); 1568 <i>An Armyng Sword with a pare of gawntletes ... a Rap </i>[sic]<i> to put in a staff ... twelve Cootes of playt</i>, Healaugh (YRS134/34); 1677-8 <i>found two earthen pots full of rendred tallow, and a broken raper staffe, two poakes full of woll</i>, Wetherby (QS1).
