1 gen 1642 anni - haulme
Descrizione:
As a noun ‘haulme’ refers to the stalks of various cultivated plants, and in 1573 Tusser described it as ‘the strawe of the wheat or the rye’ (OED). In 1642 Henry Best of Elmswell recorded that he always preserved such straw which was used to thatch his pease stacks, adding but sometimes for wante of these wee have beene forced to hawme wheate and rye stubble ... to thatch our stackes (DW63). This was then mixed with haver strawe which helped secure the stubble.
