This verb occurs three times in the accounts of Farnley colliery. 1692 <i>for gate stickeinge and dressing</i>; 1695 <i>for the end sticking; and for sticking the drif</i> [sic] <i>4d</i> (MS11). The meaning is unclear but the reference may be to placing sticks or props of wood in the galleries. It was said in 1933, by a member of the Yorkshire Dialect Society, to mean ‘to channel’ (YDS34/20) but more evidence is needed.
