In 1658, money was <i>in the bridge-drawers of Whitby’s hands to be employed for the repair of </i>[the]<i> bridge</i>, which had been damaged by mariners <i>coming within the harbour</i> (NRQS6/16). The bridge-drawers were officers employed to operate the draw-bridge and they were nominated and appointed by the surveyor.
