A corn miller, the usual Yorkshire spelling. As a by-name it was in widespread use from the late thirteenth century: 1297 ‘<i> William le Milnere </i> is elected Grave of <i> Soureby </i>’ (YRS29/284). It remained part of the regional vocabulary: 1657 <i> William Barrett ... for feloniously entering into Spen Mill and takeinge ... goods and moneys out of the millnere chest there </i>, Birstall (Th11/85).
