The word ‘buck’ was used for the male of different animals, certainly of the deer or goat, but the leather called buckskin is likely to have been from the deer. 1402 <i>et j tunica de uno bukskyne</i>, Normanton (Th24/323); 1433 <i>unum dublett coopertum cum bukskynnes</i>, Naburn (SS30/31); 1453 <i>6 pec’ bokesk</i>[yn], Hull; 1490 <i>2 dos’ bukeskyns</i>, Hull (YRS144/12,207). An alternative term was ‘buckfell’: 1483 <i>5 dacres bukfelles</i>, Hull (YRS144/190).
