A tough flexible twig, as of birch, hazel or willow, used for binding or tying. 1422 <i>pro virgis pro templis et wethis emptis, 16d </i>, York (SS35/48); 1449 ‘cut <i>wythes </i>and other wood’, Yeadon (SW158). It is found in early place-names, possibly meaning ‘willow’, and the <i>witheker</i> which is recorded in Bolton by Bowland in the late twelfth century may have been a managed site (YRS87/69).
