In the will of John Robinson, <i> parson of the church of Fawkham in Kent, </i>made in 1516, we read: <i> I will that a prest shall synge for my fader soule, my moder soule and for all Cristen soules ... within the churche of Elvington in Yorkshire </i> (SS116/275). The omission of the genitive ‘s’ is an indication of his Yorkshire origins, and his words are a link with two early northern by-names: n.d. <i> land once held by Ralph Fadersaule </i>, Howdenshire (YRS120/41); 1313 <i> Ralph Modersoule </i> (R&W).
