An iron fitting which serves to support an upper millstone on the spindle (OED). The early Yorkshire evidence lends weight to the argument that the final ‘d’ is excrescent: 1322 <i>Et in la Ryne molendini anterioris de nouo facienda cum j pecia ferri empta ad idem, vjd</i>, Leeds (Th45/86); 1399 ‘one <i>Ryne</i> for the said mill’, Selby (SAR88); 1512 <i>Item ii ryne spyndilles xijd</i>, York (SS79/36).
