To ‘fine’ was to refine, particularly metals. 1371 <i>et in fynyng de celvi petris de cineribus plumbi, </i>York (SS35/7); 1442<i> V skep carbonum pro fynnyng dicti plumbi, </i>York (SS35/57). An Act of 1489 was concerned with ‘fynours and parters of golde and silver’ (OED) but an earlier example of the occupation occurs in a York by-name: 1443 <i>Johannes Fynour, fynour</i> (SS96/162).
