1 gen 1588 anni - iron mill
Descrizione:
A rare alternative to ‘smithies’. In the Sheffield area the smithies and grinding places which were powered by water wheels came to be called ‘wheels’ whereas in the textile towns similar buildings were almost invariably called ‘mills’. Staincross wapentake lay between the two districts: 1552 ‘2 iron mills called Iren Mylles’, Stainbrough (YRS2/164); 1588 two Iron Mylnes or Smythies standinge upon the water of Dearne, Monk Bretton (PNWR1/274).
