The KPD (communists) set up this private army in the midst of political violence. The Red Front Fighters were mainly unemployed veterans.They would guard meetings, but often their presence caused meetings and marches to become violent.
The Red Front Fighters were among a number of private armies formed to protect political parties in a period of political unrest and assassinations.
