The Voting Rights Act of 1965 purpose was to overcome the legal barriers that states as well as local levels had put in place to prevented African Americans from exercising their right to vote, which was guaranteed to them under the 15th Amendment. Even after this Act was passed, African American voters had a hard time exercising their right to vote due to weak law enforcement. Yet even with these setbacks, it made it easier for African Americans to challenge these restrictions and their voter turnout improved a lot.
