The launch of Sputnik was an enormous milestone and jump started the Space Age. Sputnik was the world's first satellite to orbit the Earth. On its way back it burned up in the atmosphere. Fear of the Soviets’ creating even more high tech scared many Americans and pushed them to put more efforts into their space efforts. This was the beginning of the space race and the U.S. and Soviets kept trying to catch up with one another in order to get ahead.
