The House Un-American Activities Committee, made investigations into communist activity in the U.S. during the Cold War. Joseph McCarthy, a U.S. Senator scared a large portion of the country into thinking that there were people in the United States that supported communism and must be stopped, creating a large anti communist hysteria. This lead to the Hollywood blacklist, ruining many actors careers. This committee was finally abolished in 1975.
