The Black Panthers first begin their program for providing free breakfast to schoolchildren in January of 1969 at the St. Augustine Church in Oakland. They cooked and served breakfast to about 10,000 children each day before school, due to the free breakfast idea being embraced by Black Panther organizations across the country.
