The Gulf of Tonkin Resolution basically gave President Lyndon B. Johnson unlimited power to take “any necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States.” While intended to prevent further violence from the Communist forces of North Vietnam, it allowed LBJ to have extended control and continue sending troops even though the premise of the war was a lie.
