Terms:
-160-acres of land could be lived on by a family for $10 provided it was used as a family home and for farming.
-If the land was lived on for 5 years, the land could be bought outright for $30.
-This was wligible for anyone over the age of 21 including ex-slaves and women.

Aims:
-To encourage further migration to the west.
-To avoid land only being owned by rich landowners so more tax could be raised.

Problems:
-Large companies paid employees to claim land and then forced them to hand the land over to them.
-Some people claimed land and then sold it for a profit.
