17 sett 1851 anni - Fort Laramie Treaty 1851
Descrizione:
Attempted to ease growing tensions between Indians and settlers. They wanted to guarantee the safety of settlers travelling through Indian Territory and stop tribal fighting.
Problems:
-It was difficult for the government to find a representative of each tribe to sign the treaty, and this did not guarantee that everyone in the tribe would abide by it.
-It was difficult to set clear boundaries as the Indians didn't have fixed boundaries on where they hunted.
-The treaty was also written in English, so many didn't fully understand what they were agreeing to.
Terms:
-The Indians would stop inter-tribal fighting.
-White migrants could travel safely through Indian Territory.
-The government could build forts and roads in their land.
-Compensation would have to be paid if any rules were broken.
-The government would pay each tribe an annuity if the terms weren't broken.
Significance:
-Was the first step towards the Indian reservation system.
-Undermined the Indian Frontier established in 1834.
-The Indians became dependent on the government's annuities.
