The Cold War began to "thaw". The leader of East Berlin declared that people could cross the border at midnight. As soon as midnight hit, people ran across the checkpoints. The wall was torn down by people as well as construction equipment. This led to the Malta Summit as leaders of both countries became more open to discussing peace.
