After Horace Mann was appointed secretary of the newly created board of education, he began his work on reforming the education system of the Massachusetts. His work revolutionized the school system and other states soon followed his model. His work was extremely successful and by the end of the 19th century, public schools began to outnumber private schools. Mann is often regarded as the father of public education.
