After 1820, the membership in Baptist and Methodist congregations rose rapidly due to the Second Great Awakening, a Protestant revival. This religious revival popularized the idea of perfectionism, the belief that both individuals and society at large were capable of indefinite improvement. This belief encouraged many reform movements to turn in a radical direction. The Temperance movement went from advocating moderation in the consumption of alcohol to complete abstention. Critics of slavery went from advocating slow emancipation to immediate abolition.
