The Prices go to the Congo as missionaries to convert the native people to Christianity. The family isn't going willingly, they are only going because it is what Nathan, father, and head of the family wants. "God says the Africans are the Tribes of Ham. Ham was the worst one of Noah’s three boys: Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
