On Election Day in 1888, Republican Benjamin Harrison defeated Democrat Grover Cleveland to take office in 1889. He was president from 1889 until 1893. His term was best known for the McKinley Tariff and the Sherman Antitrust Act. He also facilitated the creation of multiple national park reserves. He served in the Union Army during the Civil War, prior to his presidential term, which gave him a good background to get elected in 1888. Harrison also modernized and improved the U.S. Navy during his time in office. His attempts to secure voting rights for African Americans were largely unsuccessful, but he is remembered as a president with integrity and pride for his country. He was known as the Centennial President, because his election marked 100 years since the first presidential election of George Washington in 1789.
